Kumai
Kumai serves as the gateway to Tanjung Puting National Park, situated in Kotawaringin Barat, Central Kalimantan.
This vibrant town is located along the Kumai River and acts as the launch point for an extraordinary ecotourism experience. Visitors have the opportunity to delve into the core of Borneo’s pristine rainforest, which wild orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and a diverse range of flora and fauna inhabit.
Sekonyer River
The Sekonyer River is a crucial waterway in southern Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, flowing through Tanjung Puting National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its wildlife, including orangutans and proboscis monkeys. Travelers typically explore the river on traditional klotoks, which provide access to the park’s rich environments for wildlife observation and trekking.

Tanjung Harapan Camp
Tanjung Harapan is an essential rehabilitation and conservation center for orangutans, located in Tanjung Puting National Park, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is a prime location for observing orangutans in their natural habitat alongside notable sites like Camp Leakey and Pondok Tanggui.
Situated along the Sekonyer River, the nearby village of Tanjung Harapan was established to support conservation efforts after residents were relocated. While the camp no longer rehabilitates orphaned orangutans, it plays a crucial role in educating visitors about conservation challenges.
Guests can join guided tours to observe orangutan feeding sessions, which occur between 3 PM and 5 PM, providing opportunities to see many orangutans, including mother-and-baby pairs.
Leakey Camp
Camp Leakey is a renowned orangutan rehabilitation center located within the Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Camp Leakey was founded as a sanctuary for orangutans rescued from illegal captivity. It was named after the famous paleo-anthropologist Louis Leakey.
The camp is open to day visitors who can observe the daily feeding sessions of wild orangutans, which are a highlight of any visit. However, overnight stays are not permitted, and visitors must adhere to strict guidelines to ensure the safety of both the orangutans and researchers.
Visitors can engage with local guides to learn about ongoing research and conservation efforts. They are encouraged to maintain a safe distance from the orangutans and respect the work of scientists in the area.
Pondok Tanggui Camp
Pondok Tanggui is an orangutan rehabilitation center located within Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Established as part of a conservation effort, it serves as one of the three main rehabilitation sites for orangutans, alongside Camp Leakey and Tanjung Harapan.
As a visitor, you can engage in jungle treks, observe feeding sessions for orangutans, and experience the rich biodiversity of the rainforest.
ITINERARY
DAY 1: Airport – Kumai – Camp – Tanjung Harapan (L, D)
* Start by arriving at Pangkalan Bun Airport
* Meet the driver and team, and tour briefing
* Drive to Kumai for around 25 minutes
* Arrive at Kumai, board the boat/Klotok and then slowly cruise to Tanjung Harapan with the exotic view around the river
* Explore the Sekonyer River at Tanjung Harapan Klotok Camp
* See the fauna life by the river
* Continue to the Sekonyer River to estuarine the habitat with unique vegetation called mangroves
* Along the way, you will have the opportunity to witness and feeding the Orangutan
* Spot wildlife along the riverbanks such as Borneo’s Endemic Proboscis Monkey, Long-Tailed Macaques, Red Leaf Monkeys, Slivery Langurs, Or Birds along the riverbanks
* Continue to cruise for an overnight stay in Klotok
* Relax, and enjoy the fresh air, or watch primates perch in the trees while the boat finds a good place to dock
* Meals will be provided
DAY 2: Black River – Leakey Camp (B, L, D)
* Breakfast will be provided on boat
* Prepare for cruise downriver to Camp Leakey, Orangutan Rehabilitation Camp.
* Boating on the riverbank through the tea-coloured water where you will see the beautiful reflection of the vegetation and even the wildlife along the river
* After lunch, continue departure from Camp Leakey
* Spend the rest of the day hiking through the Borneo Rain Forest, exploring peat swamp forest, lowland dipterocarp habitats and looking for varieties of wildlife
* Continue to Orangutan feeding at other rehabilitation point
* Overnight on boat * Dinner will be served
DAY 3: Pondok Tanggui – Local Village Sekonyer – Tanjung Harapan (B, L, D)
* After breakfast, we will go down the river to watch Orangutan feeding at Pondok Tanggui
* Back to boat for nice lunch served then continue to Sekonyer Village
* Spend some time with the locals, and see the hand-made souvenir also we will do the canoeing to explore the swamps around the village bordering the Park accompanied by the local residents
* Boat to Nepah area, and have a candle light dinner with fireflies
* Overnight on the boat
DAY 4: Nipa area – Kumai – Pangkalan Bun Airport (B)
* Breakfast on boat along the way to Kumai
* Transfer to Pangkalan Bun Airport
* City tour if time possible
* End of the tour
